Murat Karahan

Having completed his primary, secondary and high school education at TED Ankara College, World-renowned Turkish tenor Murat Karahan, in addition to his doctoral-level music education at Bilkent University Faculty of Music and Performing Arts in Ankara, has been a special student of the famous soprano Renata Scotto and the president of the Academy, Prof. Bruno Cagli, at the Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome between 2009 and 2011.

From the beginning of his career, in tandem with his homeland, he has consistently graced the stages of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, such as the Berlin Staatsoper, Berlin Deutscheoper, Munich Bayerische Staatsoper, Opera Frankfurt, Wiener Staatsoper, Napoli Teatro di San Carlo, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Teatro Regio Torino, Teatro Regio Parma, Arena di Verona, Madrid Teatro Real, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Opera, Bolshoi Theatre, and Latvian National Opera, among others. With a diverse repertoire that already encompasses more than twenty works, including Tosca, Il Trovatore, Turandot, Carmen, Cavalleria Rusticana, Aida, Madama Butterfly, Macbeth, Siberia, and Manon Lescaut, he continues to take the stage.

The artist has achieved great success through opera performances and concerts in leading roles alongside orchestra conductors like Zubin Mehta, Daniel Oren, Marco Armiliato, Plácido Domingo, and Francesco Ivan Ciampa, as well as renowned artists like Angela Gheorghiu, Anna Netrebko, Sonya Yoncheva, Anna Pirozzi, Kristine Opolais, and Anita Rachvelishvili. Particularly noteworthy are his accomplishments, including, his rendition of La Traviata at Berlin Deutscheoper in 2015, his success in Il Trovatore directed by Franco Zeffirelli at Arena di Verona in 2016, his Madama Butterfly debut at Wiener Staatsoper in 2017, the performances of Turandot at Arena di Verona in 2018, each featuring encores, and his portrayal of fifteen leading roles in four out of five operas staged at Arena di Verona in 2019. Furthermore, his 2021 performance of Cavalleria Rusticana, which opened the festival and was broadcast live on Rai TV, his leading roles in Tosca at the Bolshoi Theatre, his performance at the Alfredo Kraus Festival in Las Palmas in 2022, and his appearance in Turandot under the baton of Zubin Mehta, one of the greatest orchestra conductors in opera history, at the Berlin Staatsoper in the same year, as well as his concert with Plácido Domingo at the Aspendos Ancient Theatre and his invitation as a guest of honor to the Latvian National Opera Gala Concert in 2023, are some of his international successes. These achievements have earned him praise and interviews in prominent publications such as La Repubblica, La Stampa, and La Provincia.   

From 2018 to 2023, Karahan also served as the “General Manager and Artistic Director of the State Opera and Ballet” in his country. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts, he was awarded “The Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana,” the “Order of Merit of the Italian Republic,” at a ceremony held at the Embassy of the Italian Republic in 2021. The artist is fluent in English and has a moderate level of proficiency in Italian.
