Born in Slovakia in 1980, Peter Valentovic won several national competitions as a young pianist and, in addition to major concerts as a pianist, also began his career as a répétiteur. He studied conducting with Leopold Hager at the Vienna University of Music and with Zsolt Nagy at the Conservatoire National Superiéur in Paris. At the age of 21 he made his conducting debut at the Music University in Vienna with Mozart’s LE NOZZE DI FIGARO. DON PASQUALE, DIE KLUGE and DAS SCHLAUE FÜCHSLEIN followed there.
Amongst his engagements in 2022 he will conduct TOSCA at Štátne divadlo Košice.
Peter Valentovic already won several prizes during his studies and was awarded the Viktor Bunzl scholarship for extraordinary artistic talent in Vienna.
In 2003, while working as a répétiteur at the Paris Opéra Bastille and the Théâtre du Châtelet (Les Troyens), he began working with Sir John Elliot Gardiner. As assistant to Zsolt Nagy at the Ostrava Days Festival of Contemporary Music (Czech Republic), he conducted the Janácek Orchestra.
Peter Valentovic was choral director and conductor at the Cape Town Opera in South Africa, where he expanded his repertoire to include works such as NABUCCO, CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, GIANNI SCHICCHI, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, RUSALKA and PORGY AND BESS, as well as several symphonic concertos and oratorios. He then worked as the first Kapellmeister at the Istanbul Opera.
In 2004 he conducted the Slovak Philharmonic for the first time, further engagements followed, e.g. with Verdi’s REQUIEM. He is also a regular guest at the Slovak National Opera and the Kosice State Opera, where he conducted the premiere of RIGOLETTO.
Peter Valentovic worked as a director of studies and conductor at the Tyrolean Festival and at the Bozen City Theater. His repertoire spans a wide range from symphonic works and oratorios to Italian opera (such as DON PASQUALE, LA RONDINE, I CAPULETI EI MONTECHI, AIDA, LA TRAVIATA) to major German stage works such as Beethoven’s FIDELIO, Wagner’s THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, ELEKTRA and SALOME by Richard Strauss.
Peter Valentovic has also worked with the SWR Freiburg, the Welsh National Orchestra, the Haydn Orchestra Bozen and Trento, the Orchestra Toscanini Parma, the Malmö Opera Orchestra and the Norrlandsoperan Orchestra (Sweden). In 2012 he was responsible for the new musical production of Janácek’s FROM A HOUSE OF THE DEAD at the Vienna State Opera (conductor: Franz Welser-Möst) and in September 2013 he gave his house debut at a gala concert with Edita Gruberová at the Theater an der Wien.
